MANAUS - Lively port city, capital of the sate of Amazonas and the main gateway to the Brazilian Amazon rain forest. The main attractions include the Museum of Natural Science; the Indian Museum and the landmark Teatro Amazonas - the neo-classical style opera house completed in 1896, at the height of the rubber boom, with stone columns from England, marble from Italy and numerous rare woods from the Amazon . The old art-nouveau style Mercado Municipal (1882), sells everything from fruit and vegetables, to tax free electronics and Indian art crafts.
'MEETING OF THE WARTERS' – The point where the dark Rio Negro meets the muddy Rio Solimoes to form the Amazon River. For about five miles the waters of the two rivers run alongside each other without mixing, forming a natural border line that is one of nature's wonders. The dark color of the Rio Negro is caused by the decomposition of organic materials, which also acts as a mosquito repellant.
ANAVILHANAS ISLANDS - A fluvial archipelago with approximately 400 small islands, about 70 miles from Manaus. Is an Ecological Reserve with a wide variety of flora and fauna. |
